Cows

Immediately below is information about three cows that formed the backbone of our embryo transfer over the last two years.  These are high indexing cows of differing breeding.

We have already had about seventy calves from these cows, and should have another thirty by next spring.

This is then followed with information about some of the other cows that are important to us.

The EBVs and Indices were updated on March 16, 2013.

A summary table of the EBVs is presented at the end of this section. For each cow you can access the ASA database directly to obtain more comprehensive and up to date information on any of these animals.

We purchased this cow from Te Mania three years ago. She is a very high indexing well bred animal. She has sound legs, feet and udder and more than meets our physical criteria. Her biggest weakness is that she carries the gene for the NH disorder The only implication of that for you is that half of her calves will also carry the gene, and will be identified as such in all our publicity. The other half will be some of the outstanding calves bred in the country and you will have access to them and their progeny in due course.

We had eight calves by her in 2011 and twelve in 2012. We flushed her again between February and September 2012 and will have more calves by her this year, including calves by GAR Ingenuity.

Murray El Gordo, NURG74, is her natural calf.

This cow also came from Te Mania. She too is very well bred and has very high index values. Her particular attraction is that she has a very high calving ease EBV and a very high IMF EBV (both top 1%).

Given her pedigree we were a little concerned about her feet. However we are happy with them and her structural assessment in January 2012 was satisfactory. She carries the gene for the AM disorder. Her natural calf this year by SS Traveler OT26 has been tested to carry the disorder. Despite this we flushe her - and will test the calves.

Murray El Grando G20 is an embryo calf from her by Hyline Right Time 338. He shows a lot of promise and we used him in our breeding program this year. He is also being tested in the Angus BIN program.

We had eleven calves from her at Straban last year and fifteen in 2012. We have flushed her again during 2012.

SOLD TO RICK AND SAM GATES AT DWYERS RANGE ANGUS AT OUR RING IN SALE. THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS

We bought this cow from John Gaskin of Tuwharetoa Angus. We flushed her intensively in 2010 and 2011 and now have 26 of her calves at Straban.  The pick of the pick of these calves are the heifers from a mating to  to SAF Strategy.

We also purchased a daughter of hers at the Tuwharetoa dispersal. This heifer, Tuwharetoa E142, has had a Berkley calf, Murray Berkley G32,  who will probably be a donor in due course.

A1173 is a very large cow, but structurally correct and has been very productive for us. She indexes in the top 5% on the Long and Short Fed Indices and has a good spread of EBVs.

As the cow had contributed well to our programme but was becoming over represented in our herd we sold her in June 2012.

We have ET calves from this 1407 daughter by Regent, Mandate and Right Time 338 and natural calves by Berkley and TC Total. We used one of her sons (G108 by Tuwharetoa Regent) in our joining last year.

She is a big structurally correct cow and we chose her for embryo work because she always keep her condition and always calves early. She is now a rising nine year old cow and her daughters will have longevity built into them. Her pedigree goes back to Stockman 365 and Brost Power Drive who were two of  the early outcross bulls that used in the Kilburnie herd.

Her genes are now well spread in the Kilburnie herd, with daughters being kept as replacement heifers. We are offering her for sale in June, PTIC to Connealy Consensus 7229.

Dam by Bon View New Design 1407

Long Fed/CAAB     140

This heifer was one of the outstanding heifers in our 2011 drop of calves.

Her mother is one of the soundest 1407 daughters we have bred - in turn her mother was one of the better Future Direction daughters we bred.  F11's mother is now a rising ten year old cow and will calve in our herd again this year.  With Berkley as the father F11 has a strong pedigree. Her performance is also impressive. We particularly like the easy calving, good growth and very good carcase figures.

We flushed her last year and she now has 13 calves on the ground – embryo calves by
EXAR Upshot and Circle A Incentive and a natural calf by Murray Predestined F5.
She is currently pregnant to El Gordo (NURG74).

This is a heifer of the type that we expect to make a significant contribution to
our breeding program.

She is an ET daughter of the very high performing Te Mania heifer we bought a few
years ago. She has calving ease, very high growth, good carcase figures and just
below breed average milk. The obvious weaknesses are mature size, scrotal size
and temperament - but we can breed around those fairly easily. She was Aied to
A A R Ten X.

A major strength of this heifer is that she is not inbred. Her inbreeding
coefficient is 2%, and her pedigree is such that we could join her to any one
of a number of very high performance bulls without running into an unacceptable
level of inbreeding.

This heifer  will make a significant contribution to our breeding program.

She is an ET daughter of the big cow, Lawsons GAR New Design 1407 A1173, who
flushed so well for us. She has calving ease, very high growth, good carcase
figures and (for an Objective daughter) exceptional docility. She is in the top 1% of the breed on both inidices of importance to us. Additionally she graded in the top class for phenotype.

We will mate her to correct scrotal size, mature cow weight and days to
calving. Fat and marbling could also be improved. She fell pregnant to first AI
to Sitz Jackson 431T.
